Carey Lakes Loop:
Here is a "Topo/Image Map", with approx. route I took. Hike around the upper Carey lakes open meadows, up over the Col to rocky ridges with excellent views of Strathcona Parks Aureole Icefields. Then back down the south ridge to middle lake.

Click - 'Yellow star' to veiw photo from that approx. location, Click Green triangle to view panorama. Some route finding is required to gain access to upper areas. Marked trail to middle lake only, after that your on you're own.

Back down at the Middle Lake Moss covered rock last meadow before Middle Lake easy hiking here Hiking down small rock bluffs Going down Wide Angle looking down on Upper Carey lake Approx Trail Route Argus Mnt Some snow left over from the winter berfore I'm in Heaven Nice ridge walk in the distance Mnt King George Endless Meadows Colourful Rock Views from the Col above Carey Lakes Small climb up rock through gully Hiking across the upper bowl Out of the bush once again Bushy hike up slope at far end of lake Crossing over scree slope Looking up scree slope fall colours on upper scree slopes Starting to hike down North side of lake Wide Angle of Upper Carey Lake View from Upper Carey lake Upper Lake in the distance Bench between lakes Almost up at the Upper Lake Walking out of the trees Vivid Colours fromthe meadows below Small Island in Middle lake A steep little step up: Watch for losse rock!! Hiking above Middle lake Wide angle of Middle Lake Leader of the pack Berries by the lake Arm of Middle Lake Deep reds from blueberry bushes Fall colours starting to appear Maintained trail to Lakes Fireweed Fuzz Morning reflections Outlet Stream Small lake at the start of trail Park here 100m past Km6 Cruickshank/Branch 80, look for flagging Comox Lake in the background Main logging Road far below View from road
How to get there??     From Port Alberni, drive to the end of Beaver Creek and head up the Valley Link Hwy towards Comox Lake "which now is a rough gravel road for the most of it". Turn left at Km20 Col-Main Line, just before the bridge crossing the Cruickshank River, drive upstream to Km10 Cruickshank-Main, then turn left on BR-80 drive up a very long steep hill 4x4 needed to Km 6, Take a left at fork then about 100 meters along you will see a small pulloff on left side. Park here.

Depending on your abilities or you're time schedule, the route can be done in 4 to 8hrs. My preference is getting up real early, drive to the trail head, and start hiking just before sunrise. This way I can take full advantage of the cool... alpine mornings and good light for taking pictures.

I hope that you enjoyed viewing the Image Map of the Route around Carey Lakes. Cheers: Quagger
